Amateur Pilots

If you are longing to take the controls of an airplane and fly, you may be surprised that it is easier than you think! For the most basic type of pilot license you simply need to be at least 16 years old, be in good health, and meet specific training requirements.

It is possible to study the training requirements using manuals and computer-aided training. Once you complete your ground training, you must take a test administered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Then the fun really begins! This is the point that you start logging flight hours.

Normally you must have at least 30 to 40 hours of flight time accompanied by a flight instructor. After you complete this flight requirement, you must take a solo flight without an instructor on board.

The final step in becoming an amateur pilot is a final exam which is also known as a check ride. During the check ride, an instructor that is certified by the FAA will observe you and ask you questions. When you pass this test, you will receive your pilot license.
